Perry is a Chicago native who was birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. She made her first appearances in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC sitcom Roseanne. She was not allowed to perform in front of her family until she reached adulthood, as they feared the stress it would create. Perry stated that she was too nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began acting at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University moved into New York in search of TV roles. Her small part was in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness brought her back to California in search of theater jobs. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The role was given to her through audition, despite the fact that she was a cousin with the character.
